We're glad you're considering joining the bands at UL Lafayette. Not only is performing an exciting opportunity to continue playing, it's a great way to earn money for college. Every member of the Pride of Acadiana is eligible to receive a scholarship. Awards start at $600 for the fall semester. Or, you may elect to receive a housing waiver that pays for the cost of a dorm room. (Room only) Housing waivers can be used for traditional dorms or for Legacy Park, UL Lafayette's apartment-style student residence on campus. Larger scholarships that are based on talent and achievement can be given to students who audition.
Scholarships are also available during the Spring semester for members of the Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Winds, Concert Band, and the Ragin' Brass Basketball Band. School of Music Endowed Scholarships (for music majors) and Jazz Awards (for all majors) are also available.
AUDITIONS & REQUIREMENTS
BRASS, WOODWIND, & PERCUSSION AUDITIONS DATES FOR FALL 2010
It is not too late for Fall 2010 Scholarships. Just let us know when you would like to visit and audition! We are also available any weekday school is in session. All auditions take place in the Band Hall located in Angelle Hall on the UL campus.
WOODWIND & BRASS Woodwind and brass auditions (music & non-music major) consist of etudes (solo works), major scales, chromatic scales, and sight-reading.
PERCUSSIONISTS Auditions for percussionists who intend to major in music should include one solo or etude of the student's choice on each of the three main instruments, rudimental and/or concert snare drum, keyboard percussion, and timpani. Students should be prepared to sight read on snare drum and keyboard percussion as well as play major scales on keyboards and perform the following rudiments open-closed-open on snare drum: Double Stroke Open Roll, Paradiddle, Flam Accent, and Single Drag Tap. A free copy of the rudiments can be found at www.pas.org. Non-music majors interested in playing in a Concert Band as well as Marching Band should audition on at least one other instrument (keyboard percussion or timpani) in addition to snare drum. Those interested in Marching Band only, should perform only the rudimental snare drum portions of the above audition requirements.
COLOR GUARD Auditions for 2010 Color Guard are on Saturday, April 24 or Saturday, May 15. Auditions begin at 9 AM in the Band Hall and you only need to attend one of the auditions. Equipment will be provided, but you may bring your own if preferred. All routines are taught at auditions. Members of the Color Guard are eligible to audition during band camp to join the weapon line. If you cannot attend on one of the announced dates, please contact us to set up a private audition.
SERVICE AWARDS Marching Band Service Awards, starting at $600, do not require an audition, just your band director's recommendation.
HOUSING WAIVERS Prospective music majors and students requesting housing waiver or additional funds, are required to audition.
